Front brake discs - cheap

I think you were intending to Loctite your discs?

www.henkel-adhesives.com/uk/en/comparepr...uct/retaining-compounds/loctite_660.html

I may do the same, and I have ordered some Loctite 620 50ml which will arrive on Tuesday.

For me, this might a cheap way of getting the car to the MOT (TUV) which will then allow me find to out other things that may need to be repaired.

It also depends on whether the ebay seller will want me to return the faulty discs.

Steve

Loctite 620 or 680 should do.

Hi

I think it is not so unsafe to use Loctite.

If you look at the Loctite (Henkel) link that I sent, you will see that it has a high sheer strength.

And as villadsen says, the brakes will work fine. The wheel cannot come off. The worst that can happen is that the bearing will become loose in the disc, which is not worse than a worn wheel bearing and I will be able to monitor that in the same way that I can monitor a worn wheel bearing.

By the way, an old sock is very effective.

Front brake discs - cheap
Hi Pfälzer68

Last week I nearly did decide to buy some discs from Renault in the UK. Renault discs 402064549R would be 100 pounds + 20% VAT (MwSt), and I could collect them next day from the dealer. Renault bearings RR C2 R77 01 205 812 were about 60 pounds + VAT (I thought that was for 1 but maybe it was for 2). Renault front pads 41 06 071 03R were 62 pounds.

My first project was to learn about the discs (front and rear) and repair them. Fortunately the rear discs just needed cleaning. Front discs were much worse. I bought the cheap disks and FAG bearings because I thought they would be good, and would be much cheaper than from Renault.

They didn't work as I expected. But I didn't know that when I bought them. I now have the benefit of hindsight.

The Loctite 620 50ml cost 12 pounds delivered.
The two Borg and Beck discs cost 33 pounds for 2 (15.50 each) including VAT delivered.
The two FAG 713630300 bearings were 40 pounds for 2 including VAT.
Borg and Beck Front pads were 26 pounds

I am not driving this car on the road yet.
I think it would be very simple to do a Loctite experiment ... and safe.

Hey, you don't have to justify yourself... do as you wish... my opinion on safety is a little bit different .. but anyway...

How much wider is the faulty bore diameter in the crappy Disk? If its more than 1/10mm you should think about using high-precision Foil, available imho from SKF. Choose the right thickness and cut it to the corect size so it fits around the Bearing with minimum/no gap at the ends.
To glue it i would use Loctite 660 or 620.

I didn't measure the diameter difference precisely, but I think it is about 0.1mm because if I insert a single 1cm wide strip of paper on one side, the bearing doesn't slip all the way down.

But now I think of it, I could do a test with a blade from an old "feeler gauge". I had thought about using some foil, but I didn't think that it would survive when I press the bearing in.

I have had a look at this document

www.skf.com/binaries/pub12/Images/0901d1...catalogue---13383_2-EN_tcm_12-129877.pdf

from SKF and they talk about sleeves. And a lot of other interesting info. I couldn't find anything about foils from SKF.

If I did find a suitable foil, I would probably heat the disc and cool the bearing, and hope that I can then slip the bearing in that way.

It's probably just simpler to get the new discs from Renault and move on to other things that need repair!
